Mini-Review: Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann

Finding love among the books in Let’s Talk About Love.

Alice had her whole summer planned. Non-stop all-you-can-eat buffets while marathoning her favorite TV shows (best friends totally included) with the smallest dash of adulting–working at the library to pay her share of the rent. The only thing missing from her perfect plan? Her girlfriend (who ended things when Alice confessed she’s asexual). Alice is done with dating–no thank you, do not pass go, stick a fork in her, done.

But then Alice meets Takumi and she can’t stop thinking about him or the rom-com-grade romance feels she did not ask for (uncertainty, butterflies, and swoons, oh my!).

When her blissful summer takes an unexpected turn, and Takumi becomes her knight with a shiny library employee badge (close enough), Alice has to decide if she’s willing to risk their friendship for a love that might not be reciprocated—or understood.

My thoughts

Let’s Talk About Love just misses the mark for me. The story has me until the end. Claire Kann does an amazing job of writing an asexual romance. There are so many bumps in the road when an asexual partners with someone who is not only not familiar with asexuality, but is a sexual person. Kann tackles all of these hurdles. I love the frank discussions. Everything just clicks for me.

Then the ending happens and I’m left scratching my head. There is no explanation as to the compromises made by Alice and Takumi for them to have a relationship. They went from agreeing to move forward and try and have a relationship to living together and Alice waking up in the same bed as Takumi. I was just dumbfounded.

I’m glad that there was a happy ending for Alice and Takumi, but Kann gave us all this angst to get us to a certain point where everyone is educated. Why not complete this couple’s journey for us. This left me feeling disappointed at the end of Let’s Talk About Love.
